This happens on a Saturday and takes in pretty much the whole of London life as it wends for over a mile through the heart of Notting Hill. Start at the top, near Notting Hill Gate, in the midst of some seriously beautiful (and wealthy) property. At this end, the market is world-famous for its antiques, and you may still haggle for a bargain. As the road dips downwards, it becomes progressively more trendy. Look out for the Paul Smith House in a side-street to the left, and a great detour takes you into Westbourne Grove, with its superb boutiques, florists and places to eat. Further on, it becomes more grounded, a market of provisions, and the demography changes – embracing more locals and the substantial African community that takes over the entire district for the August carnival, the biggest in Europe. Eventually, the market ends up in a small Portuguese enclave, one of many that are dotted all over London. It’s impossible not to be carried away by the atmosphere.
