Gotta go to Graceland! I never was much of an Elvis fan until I went. Also Beale St. - touristy but fun. And if you can swing a riverboat ride on the Mississippi, you're true Americana!

Going to one of Memphis' bar-be-que restraunts would be a MUST! Besides being know for country music Memphis is known for it's famous bar-be-que.
The best place to go would be Rendevous or Corky's. Memphis is home to the original Corky's restruant (it's now a chain but Memphis is the birthplace of Croky's). I'm never been to Rendevous but I have been to a Corky's (in Knoxville Tennessee) and they have very good bar-be-que. So if you want some local taste eat at one of Memphis's oldest bar-beque joints. I'll get some directions to these places and post them in another post. |

here's a map to Rendezvous
Map to Rendevous it's located at Rendezvous Charles Vergos 52S 2nd St and here's a map to Corky's which is located at : 5259 Poplar Ave., East Memphis, Memphis, TN, USA The map to Corky's It ashame that the TJs are only going to Memphis in Tennessee. It's such a wonderful state. The cities of Gatlinburg and Cattanooga are wonderful too. They both have amazing aquariums and Gatlinburg has, in my oppion, the BEST pancake restruant EVER that also has, in my grandma and brother's oppion the best burger ever. Plus the Smokey Mountians are beautiful there. I know a lot more about that area becuase I go every year...I've never been to Memphis (but I knew about the bar-be-que because I watch the Travel Channel WAAAAAAAAAAY too much. |

You should definitely go see the march of the ducks. It is fantastic! Be sure to get there early and get a spot somewhere between the elevator and the fountain.
Another duck destination that Memphis offers is one of its famous duck tours. It is a great way to see the city and one of the most famous rivers in the world. A word of warning though: look out for the carp! Bar-b-que is a definite must for anyone visiting the United States, but it is essential when travelling to Memphis. Rendezvous is quite possibly the most famous bar-b-que in the city, but it can be difficult to find, so be sure to ask a local for directions. As long as you are in the area, be sure to stop by famous Beale street to see the neon lights and catch the dozens of musicians that play on the street. You can't possibly visit Memphis without hearing what it is most famous for: the music! All of these are in the same part of the city and are easy to walk to. You can easily do all four in one day. Good luck! |

If you want a less-obvious choice for a BBQ joint and try Neely's. YUM!!
As for music you gotta go to STAX. You have no idea all the great, fun soul music that came out of Memphis until you go there. And the Civil Rights Museum is something every American should see. |

Hey TJ's, I'm so excited you're going to experience the wonderful city of Memphis. I'll try not to repeat too much of what has already been posted, only to emphasize a couple of points. If you can only eat bar-be-que once in our city, it must be Rendevous, if as much the atmosphere as the food. Also, The National Civil Rights Museum absolutely can't be missed. For under $10 and a couple of hours of your time you get a unique perspective on the experience of black people in America.
For another taste of traditional American food, head to Huey's on Madison in Midtown. Huey's hamburgers have been voted the best in the country several times. Make sure to pair it with their amazing onion rings! If you are interested in the Memphis art scene, you might want to head to South Main Street downtown and visit (for free!) some art gallaries. |

Graceland is an unique experience. Even if you don't go on an official tour of the house you can walk up the driveway to the memorial garden. We did this on our first trip to Graceland about 12 years ago. The gaurd at the gate closer to the garden, I swear must have been a family member. He had the same look as Elvis but not the impersonator quality. Also when we got to the garden it was so quite and peaceful if not a little gaudy. We were just walking around and saw the graves of Elvis and the others buried there, then we saw this woman just sobbing at the grave of Elvis, it was sureal, like he had just died. There were numerous flower arragnements and while we were there more were brought in. We then came back and took the tour, it has since went the way of pre-recorded information but the oringinal tour actually had a guide. The house is so small compared to what you see today's recording stars living in. It also is interesting to see how the city of Memphis has built right up to the estate grounds.
I have not seen it but have heard that the Peabody ducks are a sight to see. Definately do a Duck Tour, They are so much fun. Quack, Quack! We try to do the Duck Tours whenever we are in a city that has them. Memphis Bar-B.Q. and Beale street should be on your things to do list. Ellen in IN |

If you're in Memphis, you gotta go and get BBQ. It's a waste to go to the city without experiencing one of the things that makes it great. Graceland is also a must. You don't have to be a huge Elvis fan to enjoy the site. Make sure tht you visit the The Lorraine Hotel (National Civil Rights Museum), the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assasinated. It's so moving, it made me cry.

Rendevouz Ribs has the best rack of ribs in Memphis and probably the nation. You should also go to the Flying Saucer Tap Room where they have over 100 beers all on tap.

If you think that Corky's and Rendevous is good, then you HAVE to look for Interstate BBQ, but eat there at lunch. It's by far the best BBQ in Memphis.
And yes, you can't go without seeing the ducks in the morning at the Peabody. And, going from BBQ to sandwiches... Check out Manita's International Foods. She's a local celebrity that does a morning cooking spot on the local morning show. She's got GREAT sandwichs, insane amounts of Cheese and Olives, and has the best pickles ever made. It's a must see stop for anyone that likes good food at a good price....check her out at www.mantias.com And there's nothing like walking around IN the great Mississippi. And to do that, check out Mud Island. They have a mini-Mississippi that you can walk through...and what's cool, is they keep it to the same hight as the river... It's to scale and as you walk down the river, you see all the cities that are on the river with maps and all. It's great to see. |

when you go to Rendevous, ask for DRY ribs (no sauce on top of the meat). That's what R is famous for!

Hey! Glad to hear that the show and the TJ's are coming to this great town! I'm 18 and have lived here since I was 3. I love the local music scene. If you want to see some underground shows, go to The Complex and ask when the next concert is. Normally they have them once or twice a month on Fridays. The address is: 704 Madison Ave, Memphis, TN. Hope y'all have a great time! (If you can't find it, look up "The Complex" on Yahoo! Local for Memphis)
