I just watched the show on the best hot dogs in america and was sad that I didn't see my favorite hot dog hang out. It's 3 1/2 hours north of Chicago (this was the closest forum I could find) in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is featured in the "American Pie" movies as the resturaunt Dog Years. This is a classic hang out for kids, teen, adults, and seniors from the Grand Rapids area. I grew up in Kentwood, Michigan, about 20 minutes from Yesterdog but would still make the trip in my highschool days.

The main problem I have with all these "hot dog" shows, be it on The Travel Channel, Food Network, etc., is that when they visit Chicago, all they seeem to do is SuperDawg Drive-In.
While the place is unique in being one of the last real drive-in fast food places, it's not the only "top dog" in the Chicago area. SuoperDawg's prices are way up there, way above the cost of a hot dog at most Chicago stands. Also, SuperDawg seem to be the only place that puts a pickled tomato on the dog; the usual Chicago dog has a regualr red tomato and either a chuck of fresh cucumber or a kosher pickle spear. I was greatly happy to see one show go to Hot Doug's on the North Side, but, again, this is not your typical Chicago hot dog stand - it's famous for serving non-traditional sausages. There's well over 1,000 hot dog stands in Chicago, and I'd rather go to any of a number of them than SuperDawg. Why can't any of these TV/Cable producers do something other than SuperDawg??? (You want a really unique Chicago hot dog stand? - go to Fat Johnnie's at 72nd and S. Western; ask for a Super Fat One, or a Mighty Dog. Sorry, no fries - just hot dogs, Polish, tamales, chili, chips and soda.) I guess it's the same all over - they only do Pink's when they are in L.A. And when they go to the New York area they only focus on Nathan's and Rutt's. |
