Lawrence is a bit of a diamond in the rough, but he has the right idea. British humor is best appeciated by the British - and then only on 3rd Tuesdays, but the lad seems to get a hand on some of our more distinct American foibles. Problem is, about the time he identifies one, he says something weakly glib then moves on. For example --

In the University of Georgia episode, he discovers that the ladies of the university dress for the football games - a disctinctly "southern" thing to do (a point Lawrence missed completely). After browbeating a few coeds over the practice, he said something glib and moved on. Truth is, he really latched on to something in terms of American quirkiness - but quickly let go to move on to his next glib one-liner.

Some years ago, I read an article on a campus-based "Old South" society, including a number of photographs of the particpants. In one, a number of (likely) UGa coeds were quite nicely dressed in fashions of the antebellum South. Behind them stood gentlemen of the university dressed as Confederate officers. And 2 of them were wearing aviator sunglasses and wrist watches. I found the glaring anachronism quite funny (as a fan of Peter Sellers in The Party). Clinging to a culture extinct for 150 years is a terrific foible of those raised in the South (including me), begging for a shot from abroad. Didn't see it though, which with a pointed sense of humor, Lawrence could have / should have taken the shot.

So, get off the tour bus, Lawrence. If the program is only about you, say so and do a stand-up act. If it is about you poking fun at America - then do so by all means! Being glib for glibness sake is boring in America. It may bring titters in Blackpool, but we know you can do much better. Go after the foibles, man! We have plenty of them for you. And don't sacrifice your humor under the guise of being fast-paced.

Best,

Intl Doc

PS Do you have a technical advisor? Is he over 22?
