I have to agree with thumbtack and major skeptic. Ghost Adventures is fun and funny to watch, but anyone who thinks they are using a scientific approach to investigating the paranormal really needs to stop and think.
Personally, I believe in the paranormal. That doesn't mean I buy into the interpretations and assumptions that run rampant among people who are religiously devoted to the subject, though. People need to take every claim that paranormal "experts" and investigators say and ask, "How do they know this?" As major skeptic asked, how did the person who built the paranormal translator know what words equalled what electronic field intensity? How do paranormal experts know that ghosts absorb energy in order to manifest? How do they know ghosts affect magnetic fields? How do they know that cold spots often accompany a ghost's presence? How do they know that something that appears to be a dead person's spirit IS that dead person's spirit and not another kind of being altogether? How do they know that orbs are EVER evidence of ghosts as opposed to something else entirely? Paranormal research is comprised almost entirely of unproven assumptions like this. I wish that more paranormal investigators acknowledged that they really don't KNOW anything. They are just out gathering evidence that there may be more to reality than the materialism that we are (wrongly) told by atheists and skeptics is all that science can allow. Gather the evidence, weed out everything that is as easily explained by a material cause as a paranormal one, and show us what's left. There is VERY little of that in paranormal research, despite TAPS and the GA guys and Ghost Lab and the Paranormal Research Society and the rest assuring us that they are trying to "debunk." TAPS probably does the best job of debunking (in fact, sometimes they claim to have debunked when they actually haven't, IMO), but they still have their unproven assumptions. The GA guys are a blast to watch and I like them and watch them regularly, but they are as gullible as the day is long (example: Zac stares at a picture of a woman's face for a minute, looks away, sees her face floating nearby, and thinks it's paranormal. It's not. It's just how our eyes work). Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put on my helmet and safety gear and await the thrashing of the GA true believers. |
