This was probably asked before, but why do the lights have to be off? It seems to me that when people see ghosts, the lights are usually on. Maybe ghosts only reflect light in the visible spectrum. Maybe they would actually see some ghosts if the lights were on. None of the ghost programs turn on the lights and it doesn't make sense to me - turn on the lights, maybe you'll see some ghosts.
And, ghosts or no ghosts the whole point of the show is entertainment, it's about watching three guys running around screaming (which is why it's better than the other ghost shows), wouldn't they have more to jump at if the lights were on? Maybe that's the point, they're more jumpy with the lights off. Maybe I just answered my own question.
ghosts certainly do show up in broad daylight , and at night with the lights on or off. but the reason the lights are off when they investigate , and they are using night vision only with the fancy devices and thermal imaging and so on is because if they did all that with the lights on , there is a greater risk of catching reflections and shadows from light sources. with the lights out that wont happen unless they are near a road and a car drives by. plus i think its better for thermal imaging to be in the dark as well cuz it isnt picking up the heat from the light source. plus i think the orbs would prolly be easier to see in the dark.
Great points ussula- I think it is easier also to see the ones that are ecoplasty (sp). With the lights on, I don't think you could see them that well. Just a guess.
Could it also have something to do with energy manipulation? They say the spirits suck the energy from battery packs in the cameras and mics, so they have a limited area to drain energy from -- meaning that the ghosts will have to enter the room with the investigators to get energy because no other light source or electrical device will be on at the same time.
When i am ghost hunting i like the the light off for many reasons but the main reason is that it will cut down on the possibility of light reflections being mistaken for paranormal activity also it is easier to see what it emitting it own light and what is a reflection

I could understand this if they are in an area without electrical power, but when investigating a location with electric wires in all the walls why would a ghost use the energy from a small battery in a piece of equipment when it would have an unlimited supply in all the walls? I'm sure if they could get energy from a light or tv that is turned on, or from a small device the ghost hunter is carrying, they could very easily get energy from an electrical outlet in a wall.

I always like the infamous "they". Albert Einstein said that energy does not dissipate, it just changes formes. Why does everyone think that "ghosts" need energy? Why could they not piggyback their energy to do whatever they want(the infamous they say that is exactly what happens at Chillingham Castle. That the evil groups together to attack people. These are my theories.
Another reason for the lights to be off, is simply because when one of our senses is deprived, the others tend to become more sensitive to make up for it. Perhaps it makes it easier for them to hear things or notice things other than the pretty paintings on the walls when the lights are off? I mean, despite all the fun yelling and screaming ^_^. People just tend to be more receptive to other senses in the dark. I know when I'm walking around at night, in the dark, I pay more attention to what I hear than I do when walking around in broad daylight.
