You should look up BigWhiteGuy and get a tour of the best toilets in Hong Kong. He's posted several times about the toilets there. Most Americans are completely unaware of squat toilets, so it would be informative - a bit edgier than the usual Travel Channel fare, but I think you could have fun with it.

Speaking of poop, let us know of any extreme activites or people in the country, if any. I'm looking for an adventure to take the other TJ's on that will scare the poop out of 'em.

Peace

So far we've been advised to eat vegimite and monkey brains... I can see you guys really have it out for us! This is not Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... I would be happy if I never, ever see a monkey's brain in my life but, and this is important, the things that you guys recommend are the things we end up doing. I guess I am just trying to kindly ask that you all stop recommending I eat the most disgusting things in the world... please... pretty please.

Recommend that I jump off a plane. Recommend that I jump off a high cliff into some water. Recommend that I beat Josh with a bat or something but quit it with the nasty food...

However, I am sure that at some point you all will get to watch Gabe eat some vegimite on TV for your viewing pleasure. I know you like how I just nominated you Gabe.

Be sure to shop in Hong Kong! You can get great quality things that you'd find in the US, that are over 50% cheaper! Try the crowded side streets, you'll find the best deals there. On the other side of Hong Kong city is a great theme park. It includes zoo, aquarium, theme park rides, and a water park all in one!

Hong Kong is an awesome place to visit, not just for seeing the bustling asian city, but it was just really cool meeting the people and observing how they live their lives. Getting to know them and their culture was very interesting. I recccomend to take the tram up to Victoria Peak, its a great place to view the whole city. At the top, there are some restaurants, shops, an internet cafe, but most of all, you can walk around and see both sides of the mountain. If you dont want to spend the money for that, its not too expensive, but I remember that I took the ferry from Kowloon over to HK island, walked a little ways and found the Bank of China skyscraper, and in it, you can take the elevator to the observation deck and see the city and the harbor from there, and its free! And if you go to the parks in the early morning, you can see the locals doing their morning exercises, very different from what we would think. Also, just finding hidden spots like markets away from the tourists would be interesting, less traveled places in the city. And if you all have a chance, seeing other places in China, like the rural areas, are also very interesting.

That's some great info. That info about the Bank of China skyscraper is great and I definitely look forward to the morning exercises in the park.

Do you remember any of the local spots you found while there?

This is very good information to know! I am so excited to see Hong Kong! Stumbling upon market places and talking with the merchants and fellow shoppers is a great way to find out the flavor of any given place...even in New York! So, you can be sure that I will be shopping (well, more like browsing really) in Hong Kong. I'll try to find the coolest stuff for the best deals and show you guys!

Victoria Peak sounds like it would be an excellent place to see as well! "She'll be coming round the mountain..." ok..enough of that, but walking around the mountain sounds like it would offer so many excellent views. The Bank of China Skyscraper sounds really great too. The fact that it's free makes it even greater.

Thanks for the info. everyone...keep it coming! I'm noting this stuff and planning on visiting as many places as I can!

I just found out that Hong Kong is home to 23 protected natural parks...which represent 40% of its surface. NICE! Any recommendations?

My brother and I have traveled to Hong Kong the last two years and love it there. It is safe, clean, a great place to shop and people speak English there (at least a few words). We found people to be very friendly and helpful. The public transportation is excellent and inexpensive. Use the ferry, bus and subway systems if you can. Traffic is pretty crazy and where there are crowds people tend to push through to make their way. As a matter of courtesy, use two hands to hand your money to pay for things. Great places to shop are Stanley Market, the Jade Market and the Temple Street Night Market, but there are thousands of small shops and you can bargain with the owners. It is best not to drink the tap water.

There are also hundreds of islands that make up Hong Kong. Take the boat to Cheung Chau for some good seafood. As far as food goes, there are lots of McDonalds there if you want something familiar. There also is a huge selection of all kinds of food in other restaurants.

Just enjoy your trip. It should be great fun!

You need to take the ferry to Lantau Island and visit the Big Buddha (ok usual tourist but a good trip). Go to Victoria Park...see the Tai Chi and Kung Fu people working out, the old men with their birds...and walk on the rocks.....they have a special area with for a rocks to massage your feet...a real hoot!

Take the MRT to Tsuen Wan (in the New Territories) and visit a small museum the Sam Tung Uk Hakka village....the subway ride is worth it...the Tsuen Wan area has really grown from a small village...industrial area...to a thriving urban area. The Hakka village is actually a few buildings and exhibits...you get a sense of what the area was like 100 years ago and see what a typical Chinese village was like.
No Hakka women demanding payment for photos...but a nice quick trip.

Go to Sai Kung for fish dinner rather than the tourist Jumbo.

Do try to book the FREE Duck Ling Junk ride from the HKG Tourist Board.....it is the only working junk still trolling the waters...but it is hard to get space...but it is one of the nicest harbor tours in the world.

Where are you staying in HKG???

I think you should try out the YMCA or the YWCA.

They YMCA has the cheapest rooms on the waterfront and has always been classed as some of the best rooms in Hong Kong.

The YWCA also has nice facilities

Squatty Potties! My highlight of Korea.

I don't know when you're planning on going to HK, but there's a big culture and heritage festival from 20 April to 7 May. And I'd suggest going out around Lan Kwai Fong, I've heard they've got the best discos and bars.

I've only been to HK twice in 1993 and 1998, however I did take a photo of one of the toilets opposite the horse racing track- it was a different squat variety than in Taiwan where I lived for three years. I staying in Causeway Bay the first time, nice area- and in Suzy Wong's WanChai the second time, with my discount I requested my price matched the Y's price of about $75 bucks a night. Never eat in the Hotel! -I got out and down the street to a great place with something like 100 food vendors just down the road. Great Seafood, and Great Noodles- I think the longer the noodle the longer your life is the thought! Have fun, and yes SHOP, and ride a double decker.

Just a note on the toilets. Although there are squat toilets, there has been a lot of progress in the last few years to put in modern toilets. Usually there is at least one in most rest rooms. Most times someone there will direct you to the modern toilet. Be sure to check for the toilet paper as it may be in another part of the rest room by the sink. If you don't see a modern toilet there may be one in the handicapped rest room. It doesn't hurt to carry extra Kleenex in case you can't find toilet paper.
