Hi Guys
Just my 2 cents worth. I've been to the South Island 4 times in the last 7 years. Am going back this year, 14-28 May. I just rent a motorhome and go exploreing. "Lets see where this road goes." Everything is a must see/must do. Fly to Milford--bungy--pancake rocks--Fox and franz Joseph glaciers--gondola/luge--fly by wire--Stewart Island--SS earnslaw (spend your time in the engineroom talking to the engineers). Whatever you do, you cant go wrong!!

If you have time, do the Milford Track in Milford Sound. Also, Jetboating on the Shotover River is sweet... flatspins on the water and 40mph less than 6 inches from the rock walls! good time.

Another great suggestion... Rally car rides/driving!!! There is a place right across the street from the turnoff to go up to Cardrona between Queenstown and Wanka..
Also, don't miss out and make sure to go to any bakery in NZ and try their Meat Pies... you can't go wrong!! they are the best.

While in Queenstown take a hoarse back tour. There are some great ones that take you through the hills and beautiful streams right outside of town.

For those of you who are Lord of The Rings Fans, there are some particularly great Lord of The Rings hoarse back tours.

Well, a lot of folks have already suggested bungee jumping. It's an incredible rush, but can be pretty expensive. So is jet-boating. Not quite the adrenaline infusion of jumping off a bridge tethered by a giant rubberband, but fun for those who love to combine white water rafting and incredible quick turns. The boats have a very shallow draft, which means they can operate in water that's not too deep. Put on a lifevest, stap yourself in, and hang on as the skippers blast down the river doing loops and hairpin turns. You won't have enough time to think about how close they get to the rock walls of the river and the shore, and you'll probably get wet, but who cares? You're in New Zealand!!!! Duo parasailing from the top of the mountain is outrageous, too...but New Zealand is where bungee started. Be a shame to go there and not do that. There are some great boat tours on the lake. Oh, and how about a glacier helicopter tour where you set down on the glacier's flat parts? The only drawback to all of these suggestions is that they can be really expensive. Good luck guys!

Definitely do the Kawarau bungy jump. Believe me, it's scary enough from that height and being dunked in the water at the end.... it's awesome. Would like to see you guys do it! :-)

Maybe also try paragliding...www.paraglide.net.nz from the top of the mountain.... it was also amazing.

Go to Wanaka! Great atmosphere. Some mighty tasty pizza at Tuaharo's on Ardmore, and it's probably the cheapest in town, too. Also the Cinema Paradiso is a unique experience! It's a little theater at the edge of town, you can sit and watch the movie on comfy sofas or in an old Morris Minor (!), they have a cafe and bar for before the show, hot cookies and homemade ice cream at intermission, and a real-live MC. Very fun.

In Queenstown, the local library has free internet access - it's by a pretty stream with a stone bridge.

Be careful crossing the street in Q'town, too - the pedestrian doesn't seem to have the right of way so don't try to dash all the way across in one attempt!

I don't know if you guys are responsible for your transportation expenses per se, but if you are, be aware that NZ makes you pay to leave their country! There's an "exit fee" - I think it was $25NZ a couple years ago - that's required at the airport.

Queenstown is THE place. My wife and I did a 16 day motorcycle tour of NZ in March '05. Yeow! One of our tour guides had done 30 consecutive tours there in 3 years. He knows every good pub, restaurant, and thing to see. While in Q/Town, you must eat pizza at The Cow. Its a small place near Cuba St. In an alley no less. Yes, the SS Earnshaw must be taken to Walter Peak to the sheep ranch. For what you get, its a bargain. The round trip was 80 dollars NZ and Includes a 4 hour tour of the ranch and afternoon tea. seeing them Border Collies work the sheep is so cool. If you are going to Bungee Jump, do it at Skippers Canyon. Its the highest one over water. Google it to get location.

Tiger Woods (and his caddie) did the Nevis bungee jump yesterday! They're in NZ for the caddie's wedding.

IF you guys decide to visit Franz Josef Glacier, and are shopping around for the best deal, don't be deceived by the longer time frame posted by some of the tours. It only means you have to hike farther just to get to the foot of the glacier. When I go back, I'm going to splurge for the heli-tour and get taken right up to where you can tramp through the slot-caves in the ice. Maybe NZ Tourism will offer to you in a challenge! *hint hint Mr. Big Cheese!*

This is for all who miss a good burger.
There is a little place in Queenstown called "Fergburger" that has the best burger I had in the nine months I was in New Zealand. It has all different kinds of burgers for all different types of people (non-healthy people that is). Also, winniebago's has cheap beers and quite a ceiling.

I also recommend everyone doing the gondola luge ride. A lot of adrenaline for a little money. For the less enthusiastic Wanaka is one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand (Queenstown , but not as commercialized)

Hitch a ride or rent a car to get to Deer Park Heights. It is on the other side of the lake and a little tricky to get to, but just ask around. If I remember right, it is like $20NZ a car to get in, but there are all kinds of animals you can pet and fed. Watch out for the goats! Ther also happens to be heaps of LOTR sites from the second film there. They are signed and very recognizable. And if that isn't enough, the view of QT and the Remarkables is the best from the top. Well worth the money.

I would definitely recommend Wanaka (And Puzzling World) as well. Also, there is a great little movie house/cafe in Wanaka. They serve dinner prior to the move, have intermission and you watch the movie on comfortable couches/chairs (like in your living room...you can also bring a glass of wine/beer in. Good time - it is one the main road that goes to/from Queenstown and is closer to the park from Puzzling World.

You haven't visited NZ until you have done a track. As stated above, the Routeburn is a very good one but I actually preferred the Kepler Track (couldn't get on the Milford Track). Most of the second day on the Kepler is spent on a ridge - something you can't do in most places.

The Milford Sound is a MUST!!!

Don't forget to eat plenty of meat pies. The best are served in bakeries - but get there early, there usually aren't many left after 1pm.

I took a bus from CHRISTCHURCH to QUEENSTOWN. It was amazing. Theres an X base Hostel in Christchurch which will hook you up with the information. I believe its a 50 dollars ride each way. The scenic bus ride is breathtaking. Be sure to check out Lake Bukaki. In Queenstown, be sure to meet A.J Hackett and get your adrenline pumping. Take the Gondola up and the luge down. Its about $30.00 for the Gondola and 3 luge rides. Its heaps of fun!!! I'm living my travels again through you guys!! It's a bit nostalgic!

I'm not a adrenaline junk but if you guys can swing it you should bungy jump it is fun.Plus on our tour we had one girl bungy nude if the guys payed for it.I just happened to have a zoom lens on my camera.Queenstown is a greet place to skydive too. There is a ice bar you should go to.It is carved out of ice and the glasses are ice plus there is one in Auckland too.If you get to the west side of the south island got to Frans Joeseph glacier. You can hike up onto the glacier.Very well worth it and the glaciers are the only ones in the world that are growing not receeding.Enjoy your travels!!!!!
