If you are looking for a place to take your kids in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is a great choice! There is so much to do there and the locals love kids! We took our two young boys there and had a wonderful time. Here's what we found.
Must See: Old San Juan - A beautiful city filled with pastel painted buildings and cobble-stone streets. May no seem that exciting for kids, but El Morro makes up for that. it's an old colonial fort where the kids spent the day playing pirates. El Yunque - Caribbean National Forest. Beautiful greenery and sparkeling waterfalls. There are paths for every skill level. Our two-year-old was able to make the trek down Big Tree with no problems. Lots of fun and felt adventurous. Rio Camuy Caves - A tour into one of the longest underground river systems in the world. The kids thought the bats were great and we had lots of fun exploring together. Vieques Island - If you're looking for beaches - Vieques is the place to go. Beaches are deserted and the atmosphere on island is what I imagine most of the Caribbean was like decades ago. There are only a few cars and everyone is very friendly. The Bio Bay Kayak Tour is great too. Paddling through glowing bioluminescent waters...the kids said they got Tinkerbell Hands! Where To Stay: We stayed in Old San Juan - The Gallery Inn - a small artsy hotel. The kids loved all the sculptures and the player piano. Small independent hotels are the way to go...the owners are usually very open to families. Ask about kids though because some B&Bs do not accept them. Resources: We found a lot of great information (and actually planned most of our trip using it) on a DVD called Travel With Kids Caribbean. You can find it at www.TravelWithKids.tv or on Amazon.com. There is also some great information at www.PuertoRicoGuide.com |
