I've posted my sentiments here on other boards. They've been cheered by people like me who think Ian Wright is completely WRONG for this show, or jeered by Ian Wright fans who still think this is the same guy who did Globe Trekker. I had high hopes for this new show, but those hopes have been dashed on the rocks of reality. The version of Ian Wright is too over the top, too much preening for the camera, too much making the show always about him. I've given up on the show but check in on the Travel Channel blogs from time to time and see what people think. This show either needs a new host or it needs to be completely retooled. Or both.
Ian Wright IS the same guy who did Globe Trekker. He is the same on his many, many GT shows; so if you like Vegas Poker or Samantha Brown you really will not like Globe Trekker! Ian has been the same equal opportunity ""offender in all countries he visited, not reading from a teleprompter which has been refreshing to see.
You didn't understand my post. I KNOW that this Ian Wright doing "America the Wright Way" is the SAME Ian Wright who did "Globe Trekker." Duh! What I'm saying is that the approach, tone and vibe that was used on Globe Trekker is completely absent from his new program. He used to convey a sense of respect for the places he went on "Globe Trekker." This new version of Ian Wright is a self-preening, self-centered jerk with none of the formerly-redeeming qualities that made him attractive in the first place. Get it now?
Travellono Oh I "get" what you're saying and I'm telling you that he does a lot of his bits on the GT shows that were pretty stupid along with the completely brilliant; what he doesn't have is apparently enough material to work with or a director who sticks to the script. Who wants to see another show on Las Vegas? Nobody.. but there's a lot about America that he could be his old self; more spontaneous while finding out our vaste differences. What we lack in space we more than make up for in cultural diversity. How more self deprecating/silly can you get to see him run buck naked at the end of many a GT show; but we liked it anyway. And if you listened to him in his old episode you will find appreciating the wonder of a new country while laughing at the ridiculousness of it; that is his own brand of charm for those who 'get him". Silly and serious. But let's not through the baby out with the bathwater.
I find him to be a condescendingly sarcastic little twit. But then, that is what is being pushed as entertainment these days, it seems. If you don't like something about America, or Americans, just say it. His underhanded sniper tactics are what bothers me. I was looking forward to this show but I won't be watching it anymore.
Well, then you get to watch Andrew Lessman eat bugs. Americans take themselves too seriously; do you really think Las Vegas or Nashville are totally serious subjects and don't have a bit of the ridiculous about them?? This isn't CNN Investigates; it's a TRAVEL SHOW!
