Okay, so since 9-11, you have to call ahead to go see this recently secured site, but in the 80's, NOAA commissioned a handful of outdoor public art pieces to be installed at their Sand Point location. One of these pieces is the 'Soundgarden', rumored to be the inspiration for the band's name.
It's a garden of wind pipes set on a small knoll overlooking Lake Washington. Each pipe is about 15' tall and as you walk through the garden on a twisting path, the chords change with the notes of different pipes: sometimes dischordant, sometimes harmonious. It's a weird and magical place at the same time. Call ahead and arrange to visit! It's one of the most unusual spots in the city, and has a stunning 270 degree view of the lake, from Kenmore to the 520 bridge. |
