One of the most grisly and fabulous experiences I had when I went to Siena was at the Museo Della Tortura. The extremely comprehensive museum chronicles torture through the ages and actually has the horrible torture mechanisms on display. It was an absolutely fascinating lesson on the evolution of the justice system when it came to prisoners, and it thoroughly satisfied the historian in me by giving vivid insight into the societies and fears of the past.
