I will be in Edinburgh the last week in July and was looking for some interesting reading here but it looks sort of ghostly. I thought I would bring it back from the dead.
I have done some research online and bought the book "Edinburgh for Dummies" too. No I am not shy. If you come across this and are feeling helpful go ahead and post some hints or what ever you want to. Oh ya and I have seen all the travel channel shows on Edinburgh which includes the one where she visits and he eat the haggus. be good to yourself specially if no one else will. |

"SIGH"
Ok no responses yet and as you can imagine I am sad. I thought more people were interested in Edinburg but we (when I say we I mean me, myself and I) will have to give it time. I have until the later part of July before I head on over. Boy, I hope the exchange rate between the British pound and the US dollar improves by the time I journey on over. |

Edinburgh is probably the most beautiful city I've had the opportunity to visit. The mix between ancient and modern is brilliant. I don't know what sort of budget you're on, but if you can afford to, stay at the Balmoral hotel. Great views of the castle, within walking distance to all of the major sights in the city and the staff will bend over backwards to help you find what you're looking for. Plan on a lot of walking, and visit at least one of the lookout points near the city center. Other than that, ask a lot of questions. Everyone you meet is super friendly and they're all so proud of their heritage that you're likely to hear more history that you were banking on.
Make sure to get out of the city. There are countless castles (many of which you can stay in overnight if you have the time) and the highlands are just a quick drive away and definitely not to miss. Here's the main point- ask the locals where to go: what their favorite spots are and what you can't miss. Take your walking shoes... and a waterproof jacket. |

If you're going to Edinburgh, I recommend these things:
1) Arthur's seat 2) Edinburgh Castle 3) Holyrood Palace 4) See if you can arrange a tour of the Church of Scotland - the history there is incredible! 5)For a perfect way to see how the old and the new mesh, take a walk around the Edinburgh University campus. 6)I'm sure you'll walk around High Street; that's a given. 7)The John Knox house and Scottish Storytelling Center is always great. 8)Make sure you can stop into St. Giles on the Royal Mile too. 9)If you want something fun to do, check out some of the numerous tours of things at night in Edinburgh. My favorites are Mary King's Close (a tour of the areas that were built over by the city of Edinburgh) and City of the Dead Tour, which takes you into Greyfriars Graveyard and the Covenanter's Prison, two areas that are normally restricted and unvisitied. These two tours give you so much history and fun! They're my favorite of the hundreds available. If you have any other questions, I'd love to help out! Have fun and cheers! |

I visited Edinburgh last June with my family. There was so much to see and do, we didn't feel like we had an adequate amount of time in one week. It may be a good idea to check out the Edinbugh Pass. You will have entry to over 30 top attractions for just 24 to 48 GBP for a one to three day pass. It is a great savings. You can see more about is at http://www.edinburgh.org/pass/
And as others have said you may want to check out other sites outside the city like the Wallace Monumnet and Stirling Castle or Glamis Castle (a truely fairy tale castle). It is a beautiful country and I look forward to one day returning. Enjoy your visit! Susan |

Check out a sunset from the top of Calton Hill. The views over the city are incredible. Cannot wait to go back...
