I found this while metal detecting but can't figure out what it is. It seems to made of brass, heavy and with an "S" stamped into one side. Anybody know what it is???

Are you sure it's not gold? Seems that it would have been tarnished if it was brass.

No Thunter, I'm not sure about anything. How do you test for gold? VR

Gold is pretty soft - if you can push a pin into it, it might be gold. You might simply try to tap it with a hammer and see if it deforms easily.

A sometimes dangerous test - if you can scatch it, put a drop of Nitric acid on the scratch. If there is little or no reaction, it will be pure gold.

You might simply take it to a jeweler or rock-hound shop and see if they can identify it.

What part of the country did you find it? It could be some type of proof mark... doesn't appear to be Spanish. There is another pattern - sort of teardrop shaped on the end surrounding the circled S.

Can you give me a bit more info about it? Where'd you find it? How deep?

An unusual find to say the least.

kapok07 I found this about 4in. down. The pic shows it all. It's small but heavy for it's size.

I guess I was wondering what part of the country you found it in and what type of general area. That might help us determine its age and possible origin.

kapok07, I'm sorry. I've had to be away from the forum for awhile. In answer to your question, this was found in NW Okla. in a small lot that sits near a RR track but I think there was an old blacksmith shop on this lot many years ago. I've asked everybody and their dog what this could be but nobody knows. Wish someone out there could help. Thanks

S for superman, it must be kryptonite that has reached its expiration date, thats why it isnt green. LOL. If it was found in or near a railroad yard, my bet is its brass.
